Hand Painted Majolica Ceramics
Instructor Marina Duval

Marina Isetta Duval, a renowned ceramic artist born in Italy, brings the classic art of majolica painting techniques to her students.

This tradition of hand painted majolica ceramics dates back to medieval times in the area where she grew up. Marina studied under master craftsmen and painters these methods of transforming ceramic bisque and terr cotta, in various forms, into beautiful lasting works of majolica.

During her course, students will learn:

  • The many techniques of majolica glazing on preformed pieces as well as on tiles.
  • The age old techniques of preparing and transferring designs onto ceramic pieces.
  • How to mix mineral oxide colors, that come in a myriad of colors, and how to create subtle shades with oxides.
  • The preparation and methods of kiln firing. Only one kiln firing is required for majolica ceramics as opposed to various firings with some other ceramic methods.

Majolica is a media highly recommended for floor, mural, pool and backsplash tiles, since it is resistant to abrasion, heat, sun, water and never fades. Mineral oxides, as opposed to pigments, fuse with the majolica to give a very hard, tough and smooth finish that lasts forever. Many of Marina's students continue with this media for both personal home and gift projects as well as for professional reasons.

For students continuing with media, all the necessary supplies are available through Marina's company located in Osprey, Designers Home Furnishings, Inc.
